My opinion on Citrus~

Hello! ❤

Welcome (back) to my blog. I am Kikou and I am going to be talking about my thoughts on the rather popular yuri series, Citrus. (Unfortunately, I will be talking about the manga series rather than the anime made a while back since that is a topic for another time)

WARNING: Spoilers ahead

Citrus (anime), episode 1

First of all, if you haven’t heard of Citrus before, then let me summarise it for you:

Aihara Yuzu is a young highschool girl who enjoys makeup, cute clothes and of course, boys (except she has never had a boyfriend). Things become complicated however when she has to move to a different school since her mother has found herself a new boyfriend. She soon gets into conflict with the stern and serious student council president, Mei, who is also now her step sister. Matters get worse when she ends up getting kissed by her new family member and Yuzu finds herself navigating through a whole maze of problems.

So basically, opposites attract 🙂

I should specify that I may be a little biased towards this manga since it was one of the first I read of the genre and I personally really enjoyed, even enough to buy all 9 volumes. That is obvious by my profile picture though.

Anyway, what made me enjoy this manga was something that some people didn’t enjoy since it was not their type of thing, which is understandable. The manga does have a lot of drama in it since every chapter, there seems to be something always happening to get in the way of Yuzu’s and Mei’s romance. I personally love the tension it creates though. I hate when some yuri manga rushes straight into it since I would rather get to know the characters and see them develop as both of the girls start to do throughout the series.

Speaking of tension, there is plenty of sexual tension in the manga. For example, there is quite a bit of making out, nudity (not too explicit) and touching in certain areas 😀 It makes me as a reader feel so frustrated when they don’t end up together after all of that but it also encourages me to read on so it is a fantastic tactic for Sabota Uta to use.

However, there is a criticism about this. You’re probably thinking, ‘‘why would anyone have a problem with sexual tension in a manga, a yuri one at that? Personally, I do partly agree with this as Mei does sort of force herself on Yuzu without her consent, which isn’t a great start to their relationship but this is a work of fiction and perhaps the author should specify to readers that this type is not okay in reality, even though that doesn’t need explaining if you’re smart enough to realise girls in real life don’t have gigantic eyes and high pitched voices.

Therefore, I would still suggest checking it out.

The only thing I would have advised to help improve the manga is that perhaps the author could have explored the side characters a little more. Especially the vice president since it had been hinted that she had feelings for Mei and I think the aspect could be delved into more eg. how did it develop? etc

Apart from that, the artstyle is beautiful and the plot is engaging so I really advise adding this one to your list. I think it would be great for new yuri readers to read to get into the genre.

I would rate this: 9.5/10.

It was only the criticisms I mentioned that brought it down a little but everything else was brilliant.

Anyway, that is all for now. Please follow to keep to date on new posts and feel free to like and comment!~

Hello!

Welcome to my blog! ❤

Unfortunately, I can’t give you my real name but you can call me Kikou. I am a 17 year old from the UK. I use she/her pronouns.

One of my interests is anime and manga. My favourite genre is probably yuri to be honest. I read lots of yuri manga online but I am quite picky about what anime of the genre I watch. Strawberry Panic managed to win me over though. I started really getting into anime when I was 12 and up until that point it had only been Pokemon and Dinosaur King. I have a few copies of manga and I am aiming to grow my collection but it’s difficult being a student.

Another one of my interests is video games. I was introduced to them by my dad and I’ve been playing them pretty much all on my life. I play playstation, xbox and nintendo. I don’t really play many multiplayer games but Overwatch and Splatoon are exceptions. I usually am playing Assassin’s Creed or Borderlands otherwise however.

I also like drawing and writing but I am not very good at either of those things.

Others would describe me as quiet, timid, geeky or just downright weird. Although, those who know me better would probably agree that when I am with people I feel comfortable with, I am quite outgoing and I have a sense of humour, albeit extremely morbid. I can be quite authoritative when I want to be since I am very stubborn and a little bit selfish at times. I do things my way, not how others want me to. It is debatable whether or not that’s a good thing though. I am also an aries so I have a pretty fiery temper XD However, I do agree that I’m a geek (or should I say weeb?)

Although, now that you know a bit about me, I should probably tell you about what is in the future for this blog.

It will have a variety of stuff, from reviews to character analysis or just reactions to episodes of anime. It can’t necessarily be categorised under one thing to be honest.

Well, anyway, whoever is reading this, I really hope that you stick around and keep up to date with my future posts. It would mean a lot to me if I found out that this was not just another post lost to the interwebs.

This was a short post but I’ll be posting again soon!

Bye!
